A suspect is in custody after gunshots were fired near former President Donald Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday, according to four senior law enforcement officials who spoke with NBC News. An AR-style rifle was recovered at the scene.
Sources familiar with the situation confirmed that Trump was immediately moved to safety.
Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung issued a statement saying, “President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity. No further details at this time.”
The Secret Service, working with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, released a statement confirming the investigation into the incident, which occurred shortly before 2 p.m., adding, “The former president is safe.”
A senior law enforcement official briefed on the incident told NBC News that Trump was on the golf course when what appeared to be gunfire was heard nearby.
According to a source familiar with the situation, the incident took place while Trump was between the fifth and sixth holes on the course.
As a precaution, the Secret Service moved Trump to safety, though there is no evidence to suggest he was specifically targeted. Local authorities are investigating the source of what sounded like gunfire.
Senator Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., posted on X that he had spoken with Trump after the incident. While he didn’t provide details about Trump's condition, Graham said, "He is one of the strongest people I’ve ever known. He’s in good spirits and more resolved than ever to save our country."
According to a source familiar with the situation, the incident will not impact Trump's campaign schedule next week.
The White House issued a statement saying, "The President and Vice President have been briefed about the security incident at Trump International Golf Course, where former President Trump was golfing. They are relieved to know he is safe and will receive regular updates from their team."
Vice President Kamala Harris also posted on X, saying she had been briefed and was "glad he is safe." She added, "Violence has no place in America."
