Taylor Swift makes VMAs history, thanks boyfriend Travis Kelce for 'fun and magic'

LONG ISLAND, N.Y. — Taylor Swift made history at the MTV Video Music Awards, walking away with seven awards, including the coveted Video of the Year prize. This achievement cements her status as the solo artist with the most VMA wins and the record-holder for the most Video of the Year victories.

During her Video of the Year acceptance speech, Swift gave a heartfelt nod to her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. She shared a personal moment from the set, saying, "After every take, I’d hear someone cheering, yelling ‘whoo’ from across the studio. That person was my boyfriend Travis. Everything he touches brings joy, fun, and a little magic."

VMAs 2024 winners: Taylor Swift took home the Video of the Year award at the MTV Video Music Awards, while Chappell Roan was named Best New Artist. Notably absent from the event was Swift's boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, who is likely preparing for the Chiefs' upcoming game against the Cincinnati Bengals this Sunday.

In her speech, Swift also expressed gratitude to her fans for their support and votes. She then took the opportunity to encourage those eligible to register to vote in the upcoming presidential election. "If you are over 18, please register to vote for something else that's very important coming up," she said, just a day after publicly endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris for president.

The Eras Tour star wowed on the red carpet in a striking plaid corset and skirt ensemble by Dior, paired with thigh-high boots and fingerless gloves that extended beyond her elbows.

Later in the evening, she switched to a custom bejeweled mini dress by Monse, featuring a spaceship design on the front—possibly a reference to the song "Down Bad" by "The Tortured Poets Department." Swift has previously mentioned that the song's lyrics explore themes of love bombing, likening the experience to an alien abduction.

Everything Taylor Swift does is meticulously analyzed by her fans.

Was her dress, with black leather shoulder straps and buckles, a nod to the UFO featured in the "TTPD" set on the Eras Tour? And was it just a coincidence that the dress was designed by the same brand Michelle Obama wore while speaking at the Democratic National Convention? Fans are left to wonder.

(If you’re a fan of the UFO dress, a similar version with a tapestry print instead of sequins is available on the Monse website for $990.) The dress is described as featuring an "alien UFO print, inspired by iconic 1950s sci-fi films." However, you’ll need to be patient—it won’t ship until January 2025.

Swift expressed gratitude to everyone involved in creating the video, including Ethan Hawke and Josh Charles for their cameo appearances. "Directing, writing, and putting this video together was an incredible experience, thanks to all the amazing people I got to collaborate with," she said. She gave special mention to her cinematographer, Rodrigo Prieto, praising him for his dedication to working with female directors and calling him "a genius." Swift also highlighted production designer Ethan Tobman, with whom she also worked on the Eras Tour.

The tortured poet's first single from her 11th studio album, *Fortnight (ft. Post Malone)*, took home four awards, including Best Direction and Best Collaboration.

When the collaboration win was announced, the crowd erupted in excitement, with everyone on their feet. Swift took the stage alongside Post Malone, and presenter Flava Flav enthusiastically embraced her.

Reflecting on the day, Swift said, "Waking up this morning in New York on September 11, it’s impossible not to remember everyone we lost. That’s the most important thing about today."

She then praised Post Malone, saying, "There’s a clear reason why Post Malone is everyone’s favorite person in music. He’s incredibly talented, versatile, and one of the most down-to-earth people I’ve met. He’s so polite, it took me forever to get him to stop calling me 'ma’am.'"

"Yes, ma'am," Post Malone replied with a smile. "Taylor is truly one of the kindest and most talented people I've ever had the honor of knowing."

He went on to describe how Swift directed the *Fortnight* music video, even while strapped to an operating table during one scene.

"It was pretty badass," he added.

With Wednesday’s wins, Swift now holds a record 30 VMAs, surpassing Beyoncé's 25 wins as a solo artist.

Swift's VMA history: awards and music performances

Swift’s relationship with the VMAs dates back to 2008 when she was first nominated for "Our Song." She won her first moon man in 2009 for the "You Belong With Me" music video. Over the years, she has garnered awards for videos including "I Knew You Were Trouble," "Blank Space," "Bad Blood (ft. Kendrick Lamar)," "I Don't Wanna Live Forever (ft. Zayn)," "You Need to Calm Down," "ME! (ft. Brendon Urie)," "All Too Well: The Short Film," and "Anti-Hero."

Her initial win was accompanied by significant controversy when Kanye West interrupted her acceptance speech, declaring, "Yo, Taylor, I'm really happy for you, I'mma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time!" Following this interruption, Swift performed "You Belong With Me" in front of Radio City Music Hall.

In 2010, Swift performed "Innocent," a song she later revealed in New York Magazine was written for Kanye West. Two years later, she took the stage in a red and white outfit to sing "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together." In 2014, she danced to "Shake It Off" and humorously declined to jump off a second-story "1989" platform, saying, "I don’t care if it’s the VMAs, I’m not jumping off there. People are getting bit by snakes; it’s dangerous." The following year, Swift joined Nicki Minaj for a mashup of "The Night Is Still Young" and "Bad Blood," signaling a thaw in her feud with West, as she presented him with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.

In the subsequent year, West and his then-wife Kim Kardashian reignited tensions by releasing the song "Famous," which included the line, "I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex. Why? I made that b**** famous." Swift denied approving the lyrics, and Kardashian released Snapchat videos that appeared to support West’s claims. It was later revealed that the videos had been edited, and Swift’s account was validated.

In 2017, Swift debuted the music video for "Look What You Made Me Do," which was filled with Easter eggs. Two years later, she performed "You Need to Calm Down" and "Lover" at the VMAs.

In 2022, marking 13 years since her first win, Swift announced the release of "Midnights" and dazzled in a bejeweled gown by Oscar de la Renta.

More: Taylor Swift dominated the 2023 VMAs, taking home the most awards of the night, including Video of the Year.

Last year, she dazzled on the red carpet in a black Versace gown with gold buttons and a thigh-high slit. The broadcast frequently cut to shots of Swift enjoying herself on the dance floor with her friend and "Karma" collaborator, Ice Spice. NSYNC reunited to present her with the award for Best Pop Video, celebrating her hit "Anti-Hero."
