Navdeep Singh Wins Historic Gold in Men's Javelin Throw F41 at Paris 2024 Paralympics
Navdeep Singh made history at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, clinching gold in the men’s javelin throw F41 class with a record-breaking throw of 47.32m, marking India's first-ever medal in the category. His exceptional effort surpassed the previous Paralympic record of 47.13m set by China's Sun Pengxiang at Tokyo 2020.
Despite Sadegh Beit Sayah of Iran briefly overtaking Navdeep with a throw of 47.64m, he was later disqualified for unsporting conduct, securing Navdeep's top spot.
"I didn't expect to throw that far," Navdeep admitted. "My target was a bit less, but I had faith in my coach and I’m delighted with the result."
Navdeep, a left-handed athlete, had two more chances to reclaim the lead but couldn't surpass his earlier mark. However, with the Iranian's disqualification, the gold was ultimately his. Sun Pengxiang, the defending champion, claimed silver with a best throw of 44.72m, while Iraq’s Wildan Nukhailawi took home bronze with 40.46m.
This gold represents a major milestone for Navdeep, who narrowly missed the podium at Tokyo 2020 and at the 2022 Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, where he finished fourth in both events.
"This medal means everything to me," Navdeep said. "After years of hard work and coming so close, I’ve finally achieved a Paralympic podium finish."
Earlier this year, Navdeep had won bronze at the World Para Athletics Championships, setting the stage for his triumph in Paris. This gold marks India’s 29th medal at the 2024 Paralympics and the 17th in para athletics.
In other javelin events, Sumit Antil claimed gold in the F64 class, while Ajeet Singh and Sundar Singh Gurjar won silver and bronze in the F46 category.
