Apple iPhone 16 event updates: Apple Watch Series 10, black Apple Watch Ultra 2 announced

Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, during the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference at Apple Park campus in Cupertino, California, on June 10, 2024.

Apple is hosting an event at its headquarters in Cupertino, California where it just announced the Apple Watch Series 10 and a black version of the Apple Watch Ultra 2. It’s about to announce its new iPhone 16 models and new AirPods.

Here’s what Apple has announced so far:

  • Apple Watch Series 10 with an updated design, a polished titanium option, and a new S10 chip.
  • The Apple Watch Ultra 2 in satin black

Apple is also likely to talk more about Apple Intelligence, its new artificial intelligence that was first unveiled during WWDC in June. Some AI features, such as automatically summarizing texts and notifications, will come with Apple’s latest software.

The big question will be whether there is enough new stuff to drive iPhone upgrades, especially if Apple increases prices.

We will post live updates below, but you can also watch the Apple event YouTube livestream here:

AirPods Pro 2 has three new health features

Apple marketed AirPods Pro 2 as a product with “incredible health capabilities,” including three dedicated health features.

Hearing protection, which is turned on by default across listening modes, will be available to all users.

iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max announced

Apple has just introduced the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, complementing the previously announced iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus. These premium models boast upgraded displays and cameras compared to their standard counterparts.

The iPhone 16 Pro features a 6.3-inch display, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max offers a larger 6.9-inch screen. Both displays are larger than their predecessors, which measured 6.1 and 6.7 inches, respectively. Apple highlighted the "thinnest borders on any Apple product" and called them “by far our best iPhone displays ever.” The phones are constructed from titanium, which is almost half the weight of stainless steel and more scratch-resistant than other forms of titanium used in the industry.

The iPhone 16 Pro models come in four finishes: white, black, natural, and a new “desert” color. Apple also claimed that the iPhone 16 Pro Max has "the best iPhone battery life ever," though no further details were provided.

Under the hood, the new models feature the A18 Pro chip, which includes second-generation 3-nanometer transistors and a 16-core neural engine designed for generative AI tasks. This leads to a 17% increase in system memory bandwidth, making it faster and more efficient than the A18.

The A18 Pro also powers new camera upgrades, including a 48-megapixel "fusion camera" that processes data twice as fast, a 48-megapixel ultrawide camera for enhanced wide-angle shots, and a 5x telephoto lens for improved zoomed-in details. Video capture is upgraded as well, offering 4K resolution at 120 frames per second—the highest on any iPhone to date.

Audio enhancements include four "studio-quality" microphones with reduced background noise, designed for both vocal and acoustic recordings, and spatial audio capture. A new "Audio Mix" feature, which Apple called an “industry first,” leverages machine learning to separate background sounds from speech. Additionally, an upcoming Voice Memos update will allow users to layer tracks on top of previously recorded memos, catering to musicians experimenting with different sounds.

The iPhone 16 Pro starts at $999, while the Pro Max begins at $1,199. Preorders open this Friday, with in-store availability starting September 20.

First Apple Intelligence features will launch in beta next month for iPhone 16

Apple's Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi, has introduced the company's latest advancements in artificial intelligence. Many of these features were previewed at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in June, with the first set rolling out in a free software update next month.

These AI capabilities, branded as "Apple Intelligence," will be available on the new iPhone 16 series as well as the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Federighi explained that Apple Intelligence spans language, images, actions, and personal context, with a strong focus on privacy. He emphasized that no data is stored or shared with Apple, and independent experts can verify this commitment.

One standout feature is the new generative emoji tool, which allows users to create custom emojis by simply typing a few words. Users can also search for specific photos and videos by entering keywords.

Federighi also described how Apple Intelligence signals a new era for Siri, Apple’s voice assistant. Siri will now respond to text prompts, handle voice commands even when users stumble over their words, and retrieve specific details from text conversations.

While features like generative emojis are launching soon, other tools, such as "Visual Intelligence," will arrive later. Visual Intelligence will allow users to perform tasks like identifying a dog's breed by taking a photo.
